Birthwork is not neutral.
Every room a birthing person walks into carries history. Every decision made around their body carries power. Every birthworker who enters that room is either working with that reality or pretending it doesn’t exist.
Abuela Doulas is a Black-owned training space. Justice is not a module we added – it is the framework everything runs through. How we teach, what we teach, how we hold space.
We are not here to produce more certificates. We are here to cultivate birthworkers who understand what they are doing, who can sustain it, and who can be trusted with the people who need them most.
Before this training, I didn’t fully have the confidence or language to step into this work the way I wanted to. Now, I feel empowered, capable, and clear. I’ve gained not only the practical tools to support clients, but also the confidence and knowledge to build and sustain my own practice.
I expected to learn from a renowned birth worker and to come away more informed and better placed to support birthing people. I actually got a community of like minded people, ongoing support, space to think about my own births and practice until now (as well as the expected learning). Do it. Do it. Do it. You won't regret it. It's a fantastic training and even if you don't use it in a direct sense, it will change you.
I came to this training expecting to learn something new and build a career from it. What I found was something I wasn't prepared for - a passion, a purpose, a direction that feels truly aligned to me. The training didn't just open a door. It lit something in me that I've been tending to ever since.
